Cole (BMA '12) in Ebony
I Am a Brown Boi:"In 2010, I launched an organization called the Brown Boi Project to build solidarity and alliances across race and gender. We bring together young straight, transgender, queer, and bisexual men of color together with masculine of center women to build a new vision for masculinity. That’s my piece. In doing so I’ve become an unlikely godfather to a new movement that will change the way we see gender in this world." (July 31, 2013)

MEDIA

Ben Smilowitz (EG '08) in Wall Street Journal
Red Cross Program Hit by Complaint: "The Disaster Accountability Project said as many as 1,000 more Sandy victims would have been eligible for Red Cross assistance if their cases had been processed faster before the requirements were changed. More than 150 Sandy victims signed onto a statement filed with the complaint, asking "for fair treatment and equal application of eligibility protocol.""(July 17, 2013)

Barbara Bush (EG '09) on CNN.com
Millenials, Health Care Is Our Fight: "GlobeMed, a nonprofit founded in 2007 by students at Northwestern University that partners with grassroots health organizations around the world, has spread to 55 universities and is joined by several new health organizations. Yet, a scarcity of opportunities and lack of a supportive global health community keeps too many skilled young professionals from fulfilling their potential after college. It's a moral imperative to provide young people opportunities in the global health space." (July 16, 2013)

Kennedy Odede (EG '10) on CNN.com
Voice from a Kenyan Slum: Mandela Saved My Life: "A visiting American gave me two books. I had never gone to formal schools, but I had learned to read and write with the help of a kind priest. The American gave me a collection of speeches by the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. and Mandela's "Long Walk to Freedom." It was Mandela's book that spoke to me. I couldn't put it down. Here was someone whose life I could somehow picture. For the first time in my life I saw I had a choice. I could either submit to the degradations of poverty, to the prevailing hopelessness, or I could start my own long walk." (July 8, 2013)

Yusuf Randera-Rees (EG '11) on NBC Nightly News
Former Wall Street Businessman Helps South African Townships to Prosper (Video): "When most people look around Alexandra Township, they see only deep poverty with jobs, education and opportunity hard to find. But Yusuf Randera-Rees sees vast, untapped potential.  "Well why not? We've never given people a chance in this country - you're talking about a talent pool of at least 10 million people." Yusuf believes there are business entrepreneurs here who can be just as successful too." (June 28, 2013)

Taylor Downs (EG '12) in Stanford Social Innovation Review
Humans: There's No App for That: "The social issues that organizations such as Sanergy and so many others address every day are profoundly complex. Data and technology solutions can be huge assets to these organizations in helping them manage, refine, and scale the work that they do. But the promise of both is bound to go unrealized until they are treated as components of a human-centered design process. The most important outcome of our work is not the technology solution that we come up with, but the systems of human thoughtfulness that coalesce around them."(June 12, 2013)

Piyush Tewari (EG '12) in Forbes India
SaveLife Wants Citizens to Help Accident Victims:"The organisation is trying to open up channels of revenue by training people in life-saving techniques in return for a small fee. “Moreover, it’s a time-bound organisation. I hope that my mission will be achieved in five to seven years, after which we won’t need SaveLife anymore,” he says. Tewari also feels his trauma care models are replicable and people can pick them up to learn and implement life-saving strategies in future. For him, his organisation is just the means to an end. (July 31, 2013)

Karim Abouelnaga (EG '13) in the New York Times
Mentoring Students to Prevent the ‘Summer Slide’: "At the core of the program is the almost universal desire of younger children to gain acceptance and approval from their older (and presumably cooler) peers. By grouping academically successful children with ones who struggle, Abouelnaga harnesses positive peer pressure to reduce poor behavior and reinforce the notion that learning takes patience, and practice can be fun."(August 7, 2013)
